The Swedish Government has Appointed Maria-Pia Midenbäck Hope as Ambassador for Female Entrepreneurship

The Swedish Government has of today appointed Maria-Pia Midenbäck Hope, partner at Vinge Stockholm, as Ambassador for Female Entrepreneurship.

Maria-Pia Midenbäck Hope assignment is to inspire and encourage women to see entrepreneurship as a possibility that can lead to own businesses as well as partnerships in law firms. 

- By gaining this title I would like to point out that Vinge has a relatively high number of female attorneys and partners. Vinge has come a long way but through my Ambassadorship I hope to bring even more women closer to the idea of becoming attorneys and partners, says
Maria-Pia Midenbäck Hope.

Her plans are to take part in debates, give lectures and talk to students about their opportunities to choose a legal profession and/or their own entrepreneurship. Maria-Pia Midenbäck Hope has been a lawyer since 1994. She became an attorney in 2001 and a partner at Vinge Stockholm in 2003.    

During the past few years Vinge has prioritized recruiting female attorneys which has increased the number of female partners. In February 2005 seven percent of Vinge’s partners were female. 2008 the number had risen to fifteen percent which is an increase of eighty eight percent in three years. The number of female attorneys has also increased from forty five percent 2005 to sixty percent 2008 which is an increase of thirty three percent.

The prohibition imposed by EU law on complying with secondary sanctions laid down by the United States against Iran may be relied on in civil proceedings

On Tuesday 21 December, the EU Court of Justice delivered its long-awaited judgment in the Bank Melli Iran case (Case C-124/20) on the interpretation of the EU Blocking Statute regarding compliance with third country sanctions. According to the Court, the prohibition imposed by EU law on complying with secondary sanctions laid down by the United States against Iran may be relied on in civil proceedings. Following the Court’s judgment, anyone seeking to terminate a contract with a person or business subject to US sanctions must thoroughly consider if the termination is motivated by other reasons than the existing sanctions and reflect on whether to apply to the Commission for a derogation from the Blocking Statute.
